THE HISTORY OF

THE SHAMOKIN CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE CHURCH

1917 to Present

In the spring and summer of 1917 a group of Christians banded together and held Cottage Prayer Meetings at which time about two hundred souls were saved. Later a group of fifteen rented a hall at the corner of Third and Pine Streets, called Schliefs Hall. On May 30th, 1918, Rev. E. S. Conley of Williamsport, PA, organized the group under the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination. Rev. Clayton Schive of Williamsport, PA, was called as Pastor in July of 1918. A new tent was purchased and erected on July 28th, 1919 on a vacant lot on the corner of Third and Spruce Streets. The lot was owned by B. Dean & Brothers who let it be used rent-free. Our Brethren gave $5.00 in appreciation. The first meeting was July 30th and 31st, 1919 with Rev. M. Herr of Williamsport, PA. Rev. Worrell conducted services from August 19th thru the 22nd, 1919 and much blessing was reported of Revival. Church pews were purchased from George Clark of Irish Valley from the Owltown Church. The tent was up from July 28th to September 21st, 1919 and then the folks went back to Schlief's Hall. Here Rev. Hugh P. Young of Williamsport, PA conducted a seven day Revival with much success from January 28th thru February 2nd, 1920.

In 1920 the tent was erected near Market and Spruce Streets. Rev. F.M. Brickley of Johnstown, PA was the Evangelist at this time. The Lord's blessing was on the meetings. Seventeen were baptized in the lake at Edgewood Park and 20 new members were added to the church. God also began to call young people into His Harvest field. In September 1919 Francis H. Derk was called to study for the Lord's work and in 1921 Leroy Hertzog and Esther Ritzman entered Nyack Bible School (now Nyack College) to prepare for His service. Also in 1920 a piano fund was established but due to the difficulty of moving the piano to the third floor where the hall was located it was decided to start a Building Fund.

In August 1921 the group purchased two lots at the corner of Second and Arch Streets. The tent was then erected on the lots and Rev. J.V. Krall was the Evangelist. God's blessing was on the meetings and people met God for Salvation and for Healing.

In April 1922 ground was broken and the men of the church began the building project which was completed in February 1923. The church was dedicated the
2nd of February 1923.

During the ministry of Francis H. Derk (1927-1929) a Revival was held at Green Ridge for one month during which time about 70 people found the Lord. Every night the people traveled by street car to get to the services.
When Rev. G. Guy Gooderham came on the scene (1929-2937) the Depression was on, yet the second mortgage was satisfied. Since the church could not afford to buy coal, the men and Pastor went to the scrap banks and picked coal. God seemed very close during these hard years.

During the ministry of Rev. George Aitchenson (1937-1942) the seating was changed to take care of the large attendance, with the pulpit towards Second Street. It was during the latter part of his ministry that the Second World War broke out. Only one Colliery was working and there was much bootlegging in coal holes. The War began to clear many of our young men out of all the Mining Towns and other families moved away to work on Army Bases. It was at this time that Rev. Aitcheson went to the bank and asked for lower payments, so we wouldn't default on our mortgage and lose everything. Needless to say, the request was granted. In August, 1937 the Women's Missionary Prayer Band (now Alliance Women) was organized.

Then came Rev. Henry T. Roe (1942-1947). The war was over. Conditions were getting better and the mortgage was being reduced. A fund was started to buy new pews for the church. The pew fund totaled $2,300.00. Due to illness, Rev. Roe's ministry was cut short and he and his family moved west for his health. The Lord still blessed in many wonderful ways.

In October, 1947, Rev. Kenneth C. Steckel ministered in our church until leaving in June 1956. The pews were ordered and finally installed. At this time the pulpit was again changed with it being located in the small alcove located in the sanctuary. The original seats were removed and disposed of. On July 23, 1950 the Mortgage-Burning Service was held with Rev. P.R. Hyde bringing the message. Another high-point this year was the enlargement and modernization of the Primary Department.

In 1956, Rev. George S. Rawding of Canton, PA, preached at our church until 1964. God blessed and the project to install stained glass windows in the church was started. Almost simultaneously it was decided to brick-veneer the outside of the church. This was accomplished and a church emerged that is a credit to our community. In 1964, Rev. Rawding felt the Call to open a church in
Elysburg, PA.

The next pastor, Rev. Paul K. Schuler (1964-1977) took the message of the Alliance to the airwaves, having Saturday broadcasts on Station WISL called Gospel Melodies and on radio station WPGM the program called Minutes With Our Savior. In 1968 he was the president of the Shamokin Area Ministerium. In 1975 the present parsonage was purchased, and discussions on building a Church Annex began in 1977. That was the same year that Rev. George H. Mark (1977-1988) became pastor of the church. The Annex was dedicated in June, 1979.

Rev. Mark was aided by Assistant Pastor, Rev. Daniel F. Derk from 1981-1984. In February of 1983, the church building was gutted by a destructive fire. Only the outside walls and most of the stained glass windows were left undamaged. While rebuilding and repairs were being done by the men of the church, services were held in the Parish House of the St. John's United Methodist Church. In 1985 Rev. James C. Dressler became Assistant Pastor and served as Pastor during the 13 month search for a successor to Rev. Mark.

Rev. H. Thomas Lindsey (1989-1993) accepted the call in October of 1989. The mortgage from the Annex project was burned in a service held in April 1991.

The search for a new pastor became essential when Rev. Lindsey retired and Assistant Pastor Dressler resigned for more schooling, thus giving us our next pastor, Rev. James E. Haddon (1993-2004). During Rev. Haddon's tenure the church purchased properties on both First and Second Streets for further expansion.

Our current pastor, Rev. Samuel Bellavia arrived in September 2004.

The Alliance continues to reach out to the community, and to serve as a place where, members, friends and guests can meet to worship God and learn about His teachings. The church continues to live and grow by the doctrines which its founders held so dear.
